Tumblr Staff: Please help us test Tumblr v4! We’re getting... | Tumblr Staff

  • Álber · 1 year ago
I'm sorry, guys, but I'd prefer the current design, and I was expecting other changes. So I'm going to be the annoying grunting nay-sayer kid here. Sorry, again.

I think the whole aesthetics would go for the worse:

    - That gradient thing is ugly, distracting, and breaks the visual balance.
    - The current background color is more classy and subtle, you didn't need to change it. It seems a random 2.0 design, not OUR tumblr.
    - If you turn all the blue into grey, the color palette becomes much more somber. Is tumblr somber?
    - The text would be way too big. For some of us it hampers reading.
    - Your logo is great as it is, who thought it needs to be bigger? The vertical and horizontal visual balance of the header seems broken that way, with that right-handed curve and the options too high.
    - Too much rounded corners. You found a nice balance between rounded and non-rounded, don't lose it.
    - Why do you want to kil all the good beautiful useful Tumblr icons? Seriously, "Delete" instead of the big X? Are we losing the Customize / Filter / Following visual aids? ...Why?
    - Why do you move away private and share? They are conceptually and functionally linked. Also, private looks like a button, but it does nothing. Why not use it to publish from there, by the way? Share should not use the space below, pushing content down, but use the same line, like it currently does.
    - Clicking the blog title unintuitively opens the "Create a new tumblelog" option. Creating a new tumblr is not something we do every day; it shouldn't be so prominent. It should do as it currently does: Go to the tumblelog. The arrow is enough to switch tumblelog accounts, although it's confusing to open a dropdown with just one option, and it could be placed elsewhere.
-Those dogears cannot be the best way to show a permalink. A small static arrow in the bottom-right corner of the post may be more clear and less distracting.
    - It's good to have Customize linked from Preferences, they are conceptually related.
    - Just... just erase that grey bottom-border of dashboard posts, please.
    - Watch/hide video works worse in beta, it jumps around its place.

Your current design is universally applauded as the summum of (micro)blogging ellegance; that was something you didn't need to change. It's a lot of effort for a non-request that could upset an unknown number of users. I think what most of us are expecting are ...features.. like, for example:

    - Better filter (filter private posts)
    - Better rich-text editor (inline -non-pop-up- insert photo/link, the way gmail inserts links; insert a photo and its link in one go, for when you want to do a thumbnail)
    - Option for more posts per page, both in tumblelog and dashboard (endless scrolling, maybe?)
    - Glad to hear a better customize is on the way. It's really needed.
    - Search.
    - Schedule posts for later.
    - Bigger full-size pics.
    - Higher edit-boxes.
    - When you are writing a post you should be able to upload pictures on the go. Now I have to post it private, share-select-copy-paste in urlbar, wait, copy pic url or copy image, go to post, paste or insert pic. It's unortodhox tumblrness, I know, but sometimes you want to be able to easily do a classic blog post.

I'm truly grateful for Tumblr, I love it, I love you guys. And it's a no-win situation: You won't throw all that work to the can and keep the current visuals, and I'm problably just being disruptive and annoying. I'm sorry, again.
  • Scott · 1 year ago
I agree strongly. I like the SHAPE of the new layout, and I like the larger-ness in general, but there are a lot of usability issues the beta has that the current version of the dashboard does not.

The new corners are harder to click, the icons make things harder to find and less intuitive, and so on. And the new colors just don't do it. And yes, that shadow is GODAWFUL.
  • Sorry · 1 year ago
"Your current design is universally applauded as the summum of (micro)blogging ellegance; that was something you didn't need to change. It's a lot of effort for a non-request that could upset an unknown number of users. I think what most of us are expecting are ...features.."
    AMEN.
I don't think you're being disruptive. Hearing feedback is what they're asking for, not to be applauded -- which is *part* of feedback.
  • Lindsey · 1 year ago
I pretty much agree here! There are parts of the design I like (such as the post corners folding over on rollover) but overall I prefer the current design by far. Perhaps I'm simply used to how the site works currently, but I was often confused by much of the navigation rearrangement. In contrast, the current layout is intuitive and easy on the eyes.

One thing that was changed is the handling of picture posts... I love how those posts appear in the dashboard currently!

Yay feedback. Keep up the awesome work Tumblr folks. Love the site :)
  • intweetion · 1 year ago
    I *completely* agree.
  • elclinto · 1 year ago
Agreed. You nailed it on the head.
  • M · 1 year ago
Agreed, I'm not sure the visual style needs changing. The text is now way too big to be legible, in my opinion.
  • Midori Wada · 1 year ago
I agree with every point here.

    Two points of my own:
    - Ability to have multiple pictures in one Photo post would be fantastic. Right now you have to insert multiple images into a Text post.
    - I liked the ability to expand thumbnails, not so much the automatic full photo.
  • Cody Jensen · 1 year ago
    Agree.

Multiple Photo post is something I would like to see added also.
  • UnAmazing · 1 year ago
I couldn't agree more with all of the design suggestions. For me the main issues are the static size of photos(I much more preferred clicking on a photo in my dashboard to enlarge it if I was interested.) And in general the overall large size of everything, text specifically. I feel like my resolution has been changed to 800x600.
  • ninly · 1 year ago
To be fair, I liked the new look fine on initially checking it out. Then I read this feedback, and was going to pick out which of its points I agreed with most. It turns out I agree with every one of them, top to bottom. There is some really good thinking behind this response, and I hope Tumblr Staff is willing to give it, and their priorities, some serious consideration.

It's worth repeating, too, that I really respect and appreciate much of the work Tumblr Staff has done; the rhyme and reason of Tumblr's interface have in many ways reinvigorated my interest in bloggery after a couple years of letting it falter. Many of the v4 changes, though, seem either simply cosmetic or just tweaks of earlier groundbreaking development. Think bigger!
  • eschaton · 1 year ago
    I agree with everything above!
  • Axel · 1 year ago
VERY well put. The current design/layout is MUCH more intuative then this new version. They are going in the wrong direction. The plan should always be to make things EASIER in future releases...this is a step backwards.
  • hf* · 1 year ago
have to throw my hat in with this gang too. all of alber's aesthetic criticisms are dead-on. thanks for soliciting feedback!
  • Dan · 1 year ago
Agreed. Tumblr already looks great. I was hoping for more functional updates, etc.
  • Matthew Brewer · 1 year ago
Hmm... i like where you are going, but it kind of fell short for me. I think maybe some of the problems that I am going to list are just because it is new, but I am going to tell you about them anyways.

First of all, everything is very grainy. The edges of the bubbles and some of the text in general. I don't know if you were trying to give the user pictures and the dashboard bubbles drop shadow, if you are it isn't showing. I think that if you made the drop shadow more defined it would add to the overall appearance.

Another thing that I am seeing mentioned is the gradient on the dashboard. I am have to agree with the people who do not like it. I am very used to tumblr having a trademark of being very, very organized and defined in their layouts. I think if you left the box complete and whole (a.k.a. remove the gradient) it would present users with tumblr's normal organization. I miss the ability to expand photos. The button on the corner of the post that takes you to your tumblelog is too small. I think the cutlink needs to be bigger. And I am wondering why reblogs are now notes.

I really do like how your give more directions throughout the pages. Information about audio uploads and whatnot. The new organization with the bubbles and tabs makes the site easier to navigate and read, minus the graininess.

I think that the CUSTOMIZE THIS TUMBLELOG link could be shortened to customize. Maybe you tried that, but i think it is just a little overkill.
  • supercrap · 1 year ago
tell you the truth, i don't like this new version.. something about it.. everything seems to be extra large. and my posts don't seem to stand out more than the people i am following.
So yes, i go for the current design also.
Just keep it old school, Tumblr Staff
  • Lou Lantos · 1 year ago
Yeah, I too will have to agree that I'm preferring the current design.
  • Diana · 1 year ago
I like how you can create a new tumblelog with the same account now! Was that always an option? Will there be a way to combine existing tumblr accounts together?
  • Hannes · 1 year ago
Yeah, importing other Tumblr accounts you have (connecting them to your main Tumblr account) would definitely come in handy.
  • apu · 1 year ago
Agree. Also, how about a deleting a tumblelog?
  • emalin21 · 1 year ago
the new look is really great! What i can say about this is that it has become more personalized compare to the existing look. The existing tumblr design is a bit serious, unlike the new design, it is more appealing and communicative.

It's funny when the user enters wrong password, there is an emoticon :-( hahaha
  • Larry · 1 year ago
I really like it, but I still want a search option, please?
  • armsultan · 1 year ago
    awesome guys, this is great
  • Sinklar · 1 year ago
    Testing right now !
  • hannahkc · 1 year ago
i like it too. i especially like the new layout for the followers/following lists.

oh and big pics in my dashboard = yay!

calling reblogs 'notes' is confusing though...unless you're going to implement some kind of new commenting thing at some point... (yay yay...?)

oh and what's this 'create a new tumblelog' thing - I thought it meant I could have two tumbleblogs with one log-in but then the 'submit' button says 'create group'. so now I don't know what it's for...

oh and the little corner bending over = CUTE!
  • davidkarp · 1 year ago
Whoops! The language on the "Create a new tumblelog" page should be fixed now. Thanks for the heads up!

"Notes" will be part of some bigger stuff we're launching.
  • jrrrl · 1 year ago
LOOKS GREAT! i'm excited, thank you!!
  • mdf · 1 year ago
David and Marco, you are ROCKSTARS! I love the new look!

  • Sahil Desai · 1 year ago
rss? better bookmarklet? a sensible customize page?

I really hope those are the "functionality" this new interface with enable. :-/
  • davidkarp · 1 year ago
    Hey Sahil,

RSS is actually coming. It's not enabled in beta since we didn't want people subscribed to the staging URL.

Customize page is also getting a serious overhaul.

What were you looking for in the Bookmarklet?
  • Sahil Desai · 1 year ago
That's fantastic to hear! At least now we know rss is coming, i completely understand why you held off pushing it live.

I'm kinda working on a tumblr specific editor (simulates the {tags} etc) O:) i'm still looking into the feasibility of such a thing but hopefully I won't have to if the new customize kicks ass.

regarding the bookmarklet I guess the only thing I can think of right now is the inability to upload a picture (and similarly for audio as well).

Since i integrated tags into my tumblelog (http://tumblelog.motivism.com), I started tagging posts more. I know it's asking for too much but I kinda wish I didn't have to click on "advanced" to add the tags :P, also perhaps the tags could be auto populated somehow?

    Thanks for replying!
  • Jill · 1 year ago
The Dashboard looks amazing. I am really liking this redesign!
  • janna · 1 year ago
I love the big pictures on the dashboard, and I love that when you click on the "following" button you can see the last time someone updated their tumblr without rolling your mouse over their picture. I am interested in seeing where this "notes" thing is going.

Will we ever be able to see photos with URL sources on the dashboard?
  • Cameron · 1 year ago
One thing: no dashboard link. When I go a few pages back, or if I'm in messing with preferences, there should be a link to the Dashboard like there is now.

Otherwise, looks great. Keep up the good work.
  • tushita · 1 year ago
can we get a small timestamp for each post in the dashboard, or maybe a way to filter your dashboard by dates? (like, "show everything posted within the last 2 days, 3 days" etc? or maybe "show everything posted on august 5, 2008"?) sometimes i'm away for tumblr for awhile and i just want to check a day or two worth of stuff, but since there are no timestamps or way to filter by dates, i can't tell how far i want to go back!

so far i am liking the new features :)
  • nicotobares · 1 year ago
the rounded corners don't work on Opera.

btw. Can we have a sound alert with every new post, something simple like in msn.
  • teleute · 1 year ago
Yay! Loving the ability to have more than one tumblelog in one account. :) Question is, how do you merge already existing tumblelogs into one account? Perhaps more importantly how can you delete a tumblelog without losing all the other tumblelogs within the same account? (Hope that makes sense!)
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
The new dashboard is hotness. Looking foward to this!
  • Justin Cole · 1 year ago
wow i really like it. it looks very clean and usable.
  • Sinklar · 1 year ago
It would be visually useful to have own posts and followed posts in different colors, like the actual Dashboard.
  • Midori Wada · 1 year ago
    agreed.
  • Rob · 1 year ago
Do you have any updates on the new URL slug format shown on yours and Marco's blog (i.e., the /post/ part is removed from permalinks)?
  • chriskalani · 1 year ago
For the most part I love it. It's not insanely different or anything but it is a nice clean up. The one thing I don't like is how on the dashboard the dark container fades to the background color. It doesn't do this any other time on any of the other pages... I think it should be like the other parts of the admin.
  • chriskalani · 1 year ago
Oh wait, nvm it does... the only difference is that it usually has a white secondary container... nvm... it still feels weird though.
  • Sorry · 1 year ago
It was too slow, I couldn't do anything -- will try later, maybe. But, as far as looks go, I see no hotness. Those round white corners on the blue background look like a sloppy Paint job on Firefox -- they don't look nice and round at all -- and the bigger user icons? Ugly. And what's that for? No use.
  • unclesean · 1 year ago
In general, I like it. Everything being larger isn't my favorite thing ever but I don't really hate it. It's something I can live with but not something I have to have. I like the followers and following page improvements.

One thing that would be nice is the ability to filter by tag or location.
  • ben delaney · 1 year ago
Love it. Very nice job of keeping some consistency while doing some major refining.

The only thing I'm still hoping for is some ability to either "fold/hide" or "remove" certain posts from my Dashboard. I find that the more people I follow, the harder it is to weed through it all. If there were some way to (even temporarily) REMOVE another person's post(s) from MY Dashboard, that would be extremely helpful.

But overall, I'm very excited about the new style, and looking forward to the new features. Great job!
  • Chris Poteet · 1 year ago
Ummm...so what? You changed the layout a little, but I'm not seeing a huge boost. Still no native commenting system, audio in the bookmarklet, no read on the API.

I'm not seeing the big change like you made from 2 - 3.
  • bijan · 1 year ago
    looks great guys. fantastic.
  • planettampon · 1 year ago
    NEEDS MORE DASHBOARD BUTTON.
  • Norswap · 1 year ago
Great ! I'm just waiting for api hook instructions.
  • Hannes · 1 year ago
Thank you for making photos on the dashboard 500px wide! It has been bugging me a little to see a smaller version on the old dashboard and then I had to click to go to the original post for the bigger version.

Everything looks great. Keep up the good work :)
  • jackhynes · 1 year ago
I agree everything looks much better. Looking forward to new functionality, hopefully it won't take as long as last time!
  • davenport · 1 year ago
I'd really like the portraits back when I click to see who has reblogged a post. Also, after the gradient ends, the portrait photos look like they're floating in space. Some kind of shadow or border would be nice.
  • Guido Rosso · 1 year ago
Why not keep the images small by default, but on click scale them (inline) to large version? It's easier to read the dashboard when the images are small, but I also understand wanting to see the images in higher res. This would satisfy both sides of the issue.

The design is nice and clean, thanks for giving us a preview.
  • Guido Rosso · 1 year ago
Wow, just realized this functionality is already built in. I always figured that clicking on the images would take me to the click-through link. I definitely prefer this functionality.
  • sds · 1 year ago
I definitely prefer the old way of viewing pics as thumbnails first, with the option to expand.
  • Catalu · 1 year ago
Woooo hooooo!!! : ) is pretty cool the V4!!!

All the new is rare in a beginning but with the time will tranformed in great stuff!

I have a question for the Staff, the new update for the code when will available?

Thanks and sorry for my poor english
  • mrnico · 1 year ago
Hum, please keep the current version. So much faster to go through posts in the dashboard.
I really dont like the beta version, sorry !
  • mars · 1 year ago
I like the BETA version a lot! the presentation is very elegant and the dog-ear on rollover minimize words on the dashboard...which is why the delete and edit links should be changed back to X and pen icons.

Also, I follow a lot of photography tumblrs, so it would be awesome to have the current feature of clicking an image to enlarge it instead of having to view the max size on the dashboard because it makes scrolling through new entries very tedious.

I love Tumblr! Keep up the good work! <3 the beta looks!
  • rickycatto · 1 year ago
cool... love that i can add more tumblr blogs on the same account. I have been using opera for one account and firefox for another because i don't want to have to log in and out. can't wait to be able to import.

Thank you thnak you thank you!
  • rickycatto · 1 year ago
maybe i made a mistake but it shows my added blog twice... btw where do you delete added blogs?
  • cakeface · 1 year ago
i really liked the fact that when a picture was on your dashboard you could click it to see the bigger view or scroll past unnoticed if it was something you didn't want to see. this was specifically handy at work when an "artful nude" scrolled by - now however it's much harder to tumbl incognito.
  • katiebakes · 1 year ago
Not sure I love the new colors, but that's just aesthetics. (They look horrible on IE on my work PC, but better on my home Mac.)

What I'm wondering is - have you considered adding a little more freedom to the reblog? Currently when you reblog a text post, for example, you're given the option to reblog it as text, a quote, or a link. If you reblog a link or a quote, though, they remain in the same format, which can sometimes look sloppy for people who read your Tumblr directly and not through the Dashboard. (This is particularly true for reblogged quotes, which also end up looking odd on the Dashboard to boot).

Anyway, do very much appreciate what must have been the enormous amount of work put into this redesign! I'm happy to expand on my question further if its helpful.
  • Amanda Small · 1 year ago
I enjoyed how the pictures would be icon sized and then, when clicked, would get larged. The lack of that saddens me.
  • Andy Tovar · 1 year ago
I also feel that defaulting to the larger size is a mistake. More often than not, I use the dashboard to quickly scan through my photo posts and having the larger photo display tires out my scrolling finger.
  • Lola $malls · 1 year ago
Can we please, PLEASE, get a function that will enable us to save drafts?
  • dommelr · 1 year ago
I liked the tumbnail of images with the ability to expand if you want, now my dashboard is huge. Everything looks bigger and bolder and not in a good way. I also preferred the little icons for reblog, edit and delete. They just look nicer.
Also, the shadow on the tumblr logo is hideous and I'm not a fan of the new colors.
That being said, I do kind of like the new design, it just looks a bit bulky. I also like the option of creating a new tumblog with the same account.
  • ignoranceisabliss · 1 year ago
I appreciate what you guys have done but I prefer the current layout, esthetically and functionally.

Out of curiosity, is there any chance that you would implement multiple pictures on a single post?
  • Midori Wada · 1 year ago
"Out of curiosity, is there any chance that you would implement multiple pictures on a single post?"

Yes, please! That would be great - right now I'm stuck making text posts and inserting multiple pictures.
  • flyonair · 1 year ago
i like the new organisation but the outlined logo "tumblr" in black remind me the typo choice of the 70...
  • sarahclare · 1 year ago
i love how the posts are broken up it makes it easier to read
and how the pictures are posted as well as the music posts
    thank you!
  • Jonathan Tran · 1 year ago
This new design is absolutely beautiful! The over-sized everything makes it feel even simpler. The curvy tab on the top right of the dashboard is just great. The full-size icons of other users is nice, allowing people to actually see much more detailed icons. Shrinking and showing the titles of things I follow is also a great change, obvious in hindsight.

One thing I'm not feeling is the enlarged pics for photo posts in the dashboard. It makes me have to scroll a lot. Also, when other people post things nsfw, I could easily get away with the shrunken image thumbnails. Now I have to look over my shoulder before I refresh my dashboard :-(
  • caryrandolph · 1 year ago
Will we be able to opt-out of the new design? Because I really don't like this. Everything is way too huge. It's like a Texas version of the current Tumblr. And we should continue to have the option to enlarge photo posts on our dashboard rather than simply seeing them full-size immediately (otherwise we run the risk of coworkers seeing questionable photo posts by accident).
The current design is perfect - why mess with it?
  • Seriouslythough · 1 year ago

yep - i have to agree this layout is WAY TOO BIG. i could not discretely follow tumblr at work if it takes up this much space. on the same note, the picture quality is excellent, but i do not want every picture at full size when i open the site.

a few changes already mentioned i would really like to see - being able to post multiple pictures in the same post. having the option to repost in another format, like quote to text, or picture to link. and enabling any version of search - time stamp, subject, something.

thanks for a great site and thank you for taking our comments into consideration.
  • jessicalouise · 1 year ago
The arial font is ugly and the size is too big.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Not only is the arial ugly, but it is a step down from the Helvetica of old, and Verdana in place of Lucida Grande is not the best decision either.
  • marie · 1 year ago
also - it would be helpful to include spell check in all post options. not sure if this is already functional, as my current 'share on tumblr' goes to v3.
  • zoe · 1 year ago
k.i.s.s. :-) be careful of the pressure to upgrade and redesign. continuity and stability is a major plus in this ever-changing digital world.
  • recent.tumblr.com · 1 year ago
Much less easy to scan and differentiate content, despite the higher contrast of the images and larger type to the white background. I'm sure you have your reasons, but it feels overwrought and unnecessarily fussy in the details. Rather than a high-level view of my recent posts and those that I am following, I'm getting a sense that I am skimming over an RSS feed, which makes me much less inclined to navigate away from my own dashboard.
  • rob · 1 year ago
I agree with the over analysis of the design changes. he's totally right, theres no reason to change the design at all. it's an inspirationaly awesome style.

i would however, *really* like the option to change dates of posted items so in the instance of a new account, you can build an small archive without having 20 posts from the same day.
  • rob · 1 year ago
uh, nevermind. you can change the dates. i'm retarded. ignore me.

    don't change the design though.
  • Levi Beach · 1 year ago
Not a fan of the redesign. The current one seems more up-to-date.

    AMEN. (2)
  • Dylan · 1 year ago
well, if that alber fellow didnt give you enough information to help form the new design, then i guess were sol.
i like the old design better, but i could go for honestly either one.
  • Erika · 1 year ago
i like the new design..even more so than the original...i like how the pictures are regular size in the dashboard, i like the format of the following/followers page *even though the original is simple, and more fun*.
-...but why dont you guys make your own comments set up instead of using another site? it would make it easier to get in contact with ppl instead of using reblogs as a way of commenting
-..and is there any way where you could make it so you can post multiple pics at once..instead of one at a time..it's extremely annoying having to do it one at a time without using the add picture feature in the caption box

and i think that's all i have to say right now..
  • Sam Pura · 1 year ago
I'm not into that huge dashboard. But I do dig the notes.
  • Errando · 1 year ago
I like the "open it" button, and the "create a new tumblelog" option.
Otherwise, I am afraid that I prefer the current tumblr, which I love. in the new one, everything seems oversized for no apparent reason (i.e. large images by default is not a good idea). It is difficult to look at a post when you have to keep scrolling up and down (and the only thing that should probably be bigger, the permalink location, is still too small).
I also think that additional customization assistance would be great. Some examples:
    - Some filtering and/or search options related to tags.
    - The capacity to link tags and themes (i.e. associating a tag with an specific background and/or font).
  • Cameron Christopher · 1 year ago
I think the gradient seems more childish and less classy than when we have now, and the text seems over-sized, as if Tumblr were going for a senior citizen edition. The thoughts were nice, like the full sized pictures and the "open it" link, but I thought you guys had really nailed it on the current design, so this feels pushed too far.
  • Cool.Calm.RaCoon. · 1 year ago
The look that you guys have, you don't want to loose. It's the reason I think we all use tumblr.com, for that originality.
  • hilker · 1 year ago
i have a thought on an added feature, not so much the look. it would be great if i could see, when i'm reblogging something from somewhere besides the dashboard, what others have reblogged so as to be redundant.
  • Hororo · 1 year ago
Likewise I'm not really convinced by the change you want to make to TumblR. What I think is truly needed is a clearer profile that the person who read each pages can consult and also a comment option. Otherwise, TumblR has one of the easiest user interface and the way and you should keep it that way.

hey guys, not going to lie, i really dont prefer it. i like the current design much much better. its cleaner and much more appealing to the eyes. please dont change it.

The new dashboard looks nice. It's a bit large. I can live with either/or honestly. The only thing that's changed though is the look. All the actual features that we use are the same though so I don't understand what the purpose of all this is?
  • jorge · 1 year ago
    seria bueno:
poder añadir el tema de los comentarios, directamente, desde dashboard
poder hacer posts con banners enlazados
    añadir mas posibildades de customizacion
poder modificar el tamaño de las imagenes
mas posibilidades del editor de texto

i dont like very much...yes it has very good design but the old one is much more fast because of the small size of the pics in the post....

furthermore i would like to see new features.....

You know what I always wanted: a RSS feed from the whole people i'm following together, not just one by one. that would be great. It would be like having the dashboard on my reader. thanks.

Purely aesthetic comment -- I like the old dashboard better, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I assume you're making room for new features that aren't in here yet.
  • Heather · 1 year ago
I like it! The images look much better.
  • jenniville · 1 year ago
I like the new presentation of the Dashboard, however I like how on the current Dashboard the posts are one color for your own posts, then a different color for posts of friends you are following. Perhaps there could be a way on the new one to customize it to change the colors of others posts?
I DEFINITELY agree with the people who are suggesting a comment option on the tumblelog, but only if the tumblelog writer has a choice to delete or keep the comment, in case of spamming.
  • Stacey · 1 year ago
Yeah, i preferred the old design better, and I didn't notice many other changes. What I would like to see is the filter option expanded to certain things posted by certain other people, and being able to click on that link and being redirected to the corresponding page on their blog.
  • Grdei · 1 year ago
Great improvements, but i definitely prefer the black background. Also, I miss that pictures were thumbnails in your dashboard, and when you clicked them, it'd show a bigger picture. Now, all you can see is the maximized photo. But you did a great job!
  • Johanna · 1 year ago
I prefer the classic look, because I'm a very traditional person. I suggest keeping the classic open for whoever still wants to use that, but the new one for whoever would like a change.

There are actually a lot of good ideas, and work, put into this that I wouldn't doubt all the people who will be willing to use it. It's absolutely amazing. But I, as a traditional person, wouldn't like a change. I know exactly where everything is and how to get there and I wouldn't like to change that.

I'd compare this to the new MySpace homepage; I'm still on the classic version as are a lot of my friends and probably thousands of other people, because it's just a lot easier to keep what has been there for however long.
  • McNally · 1 year ago
I love how the photos are they're actual sizes on the dashboard.
But I agree with Alber with these points

-Too much rounded corners. You found a nice balance between rounded and non-rounded, don't lose it.
    - Why do you want to kil all the good beautiful useful Tumblr icons? Seriously, "Delete" instead of the big X? Are we losing the Customize / Filter / Following visual aids? ...Why?

This guy really knows what he's talking about, and it also truly looks like he's speaking on behalf of the vast majority of your users. I know he's speaking on behalf of me.

The subtly, colors, and overall SIMPLICITY is what drew me to Tumblr in the first place. You aren't Facebook and don't need to become Facebook. Their redesign was a mistake. This proposed aesthetic shift is also.

Keep it simple, stupid. I feel like this was a definite mantra during your first design, from everything to the icons, your logo, and the Xs. Don't redesign just to change it up. Add more features, fine.

I've been using this service for only a week. But the difference is, I've REALLY been using it. And don't plan to stop. And it's because of the ease of use, again, the not-flashy-simplistic aesthetic, and your ability to allow your users to be the star here. Keep it that way, and you all will be undoubtedly far more successful.

Homies, I like the color scheme, and the curves, and the tabs and all that. But the new "tumblr" logo has got to go. That looks wayyyy tooo old. Stuff seems to be "popping" out too much on that page. I prefer the current design where everything flows and blends together.

Also, I noticed that preferences let users pick whether to load full-size pics or small ones. I would say keep that option unchecked by default. It'll save you a lot of "nay-sayer" comments here. Also, the "Open it" link takes time getting used to. I like it when you had the log name as "go to Man Of Mistry". Much easy to read.

Anywho, I like the color scheme, but the design overhaul seems to have gone too far. Dim it down a little. Also, I just noticed the favicon. C'mon, the older one's wayyyy better. You have to agree to that.

Keep up the great work, and put some more dashboard functionality(s).
  • divyamistry · 1 year ago
Ok, so I take part of my statement back. I said I liked the color scheme. Actually... I don't know if I like it more than the current one. The current one is much better. k.i.s.s. folks. I'd like more stuff to do for dashboard, than any color/shape/etc changes. Better ways to find friends, videos, groups. More goodies would also be good.
  • divyamistry · 1 year ago
Here's something else I'd like to see. When I send a msg through IM, why not let me categorize the msg. For example, if I IM:

    :photo: :<url>: :title: :tag1, tag2: :msg:

then my post goes in as a Picture post. It can't be THAT hard to do, right? If I don't want to add tags, all I do is :: for tags part. And you can keep the default to Text or whatever you like. What say you?
  • wildx22 · 1 year ago
I don't like how all the posts look the same in the Dashboard. I like how the user's posts have a different background colour like now.

The current design looks so much better. :/ I like the classy dark colour scheme of the current design. The logo on the beta design also looks highly comedic.

At the moment, I like everything better in the current theme. (Other than the new corner fold hover effect)
  • jlmathwhiz · 1 year ago
I'm finding myself agreeing with many of the other people here...I could live with the new version, but I'm finding myself happier with the current one.
I think the text on the dashboard of the new design, in particular, is WAY too large and distracts from one's ability to read it.
Possibly the new design could be available for those who prefer it, and the current one could be an option to keep? I'd be more than fine with that :)
  • Guido Rosso · 1 year ago
I know this is nitpicking, but would it be possible to fix up the rounded corners on the tab? They're not perfectly smooth right now. This is what I'm talking about: http://realityslip.com/tumblr.png
  • John · 1 year ago
How disappointing. The new interface is fine, but what about new features? How about being able to actually search for other tumble logs? How about being able to leave comments? How about better options for embedding on a blog?

These aren't advanced features, they are basic necessities. Please, quit spending time making it more styled like web2.0 and create some very basic features!

Disappointed. I hope you didn't spend too much time making the login font gigantic.

I'm not a big fan of the bigger pictures. the layout is good, I mean, it's pretty much the same as the old one, but the pictures are huge, and it doesn't seem like there's as much space.
In my opinion, I would leave it the way it is.
    Keep on keepin' on
  • Claudia · 1 year ago
Must agree with much of what has been said. Sorry guys, but I prefer the old version as well. The new colours and layout just don't feel like the simple, clean tumblr we all know and love. The new one feels too much like any other blog service.
  • dubax · 1 year ago
like the new design and that you can now have multiple tumblogs under one email address. however, being able to do multiple pictures in a single post without having to link via URL in a text post would see to be a more pertinent and basic need. to me anyway

    Hi tumblr!

I just want to say how much i love tumblr, and that i think the new site looks great (although there was nothing at all wrong with the old one :) ). Just one thing though - i've noticed that when people post moving .gifs on tumblr, they don't move? they don't play at all in the new version, and in the old version they only play on the thumbnailed version. if you click them into full size, they no longer play.

once again, i love the site. keep up the good work!

    Hi Guys,

I'm fairly new to Tumblr (it was highly recommended to me though ;) ) so bear with me if I miss something.

    1) The larger layout I like, it makes viewing pictures easier as they do not need to be clicked on to see clearly, however, I find that they are perhaps too big. Even on my work computer (1280X1024) I sometimes have to do a fair amount of scrolling to see posts in their entirety. I find that the size of pictures when I click on them in the current version is adequate.

    2) The larger profile pictures are nice, even if I can now see a flaw in my own.

    3) I've noticed the 'Dashboard' link disappears when on the dashboard itself, and even though I know all the keyboard shortcuts, I still click on it to refresh the page.

    4) I'm not so sure about the lighter background colour. The loss of contrast between the posts and he background is quite noticeable and I feel it distracts slightly from the posts.

    5) There is an edge around the enlarged "Tumblr" logo. I think this makes it look clunky rather than sharp and is a bit overbearing on the page as a whole; as if we needed reminding what site we were on.

    6) This is probably the change I dislike most. In posts, instead of saying "X reblogs" it now says "X Notes". I don't think that makes clear what it stands for. People may confuse notes with comments. I would think that that would make reblogging less popular as people are less likely to read what they think are comments.

Just remember: if it ain't broke, don't fix it and like my OS, a rolling update is smoother than leaps and bounds into the unknown. Keep up the excellent work though, I haven't been disappointed yet.
  • revengingangel · 1 year ago
It's not bad. I mean its a nice face lift, but I would like to see more of access to seeing other people's journals and other applications. I mean for someone who is new to tumblr will feel a little out of place. But personally, I like the original design, I think you might want to focus more on branching out and building on the community more.

But then again I could be wrong with my opinions.
  • StylelaB · 1 year ago
I like the new design but I don't like too much the font size. It too much big and I must scorll down more or clicking "older post" more.
    Love Tumblr.
P/s: I really don't like the new logo of Tubmlr, I like the current logo with a style of Web 2.0 but it's simple & remarquable. The new Logo like the old style of 90's or 80's. Well, I don't know how Tumblr Staff build their brand but the old style is not a new trend in logo design & this style like some logo of music band.
  • g · 1 year ago
Don't fix something that isn't broken.
  • loudersoft · 1 year ago
    a) I did not read all these comments (sorry that's a lot of reading and i'm sleepy)

    b) I really like the current design much better. It feels much friendlier and easier to use than the beta. Specifically, the way images are displayed as clickable thumbnails in the current design is a main ingredient I found to be missing.

I'll play with it more but eh...stick with the current design in my opinion.

    Tumblr vs Cocoloop
I first test Cocoloop, then Tumblr. Tumblr is the winner.

    Tumblr

    * is faster
    * has intuitive create/edit/delete image buttons
    * more features can be customized

    Cocoloop

    * when posting music i can look up for songs
    * when posting videos i can look up for clips in youtube and capture from camera
  • KevinNuut · 1 year ago
I'd love easier access to seeing who is following me, and easier ways to directly contact those people. A built in comment system would be nice, using the logins from Tumblr.

  • becauseican · 1 year ago
I wanted to comment about the superfluously large rounded corners, the abandon of icons and so on but all this has been said before.

I like the dashboard in its current form. Why would you want to fix something that is not broken?

Here is a suggestion: when accessing a post via its permalink, {TotalPages} is always 1. It's wrong and it should be trivial to fix. Stop wasting your time on useless stuff, please.
  • ebee · 1 year ago
i prefer the alpha version. the beta version makes everything seems bigger. i love the feel that tumblr used to make things just fit here and there. it just.. i lost the feel to post anything if like that :D but keep it up. even though it is not best, for me, it is not that bad either.

    current design rocks!
  • xryzllxd · 1 year ago
Currently testing Tumblr Beta/Tumblr v4. It’s fine. Not much difference between the old one. I think all it improved is the look.

I have a suggestion, or more of like a request. I wish they could put something like, automatic recovery or something like that.

One time I was typing and I already typed so long, as in LONG, when my IE7 hanged up. IT WAS REALLY IRRITATING. It wasn’t saved so it got lost, forever.
  • josh · 1 year ago
I agree with what Alber has to say, he sums better than I ever could. The original one is perfect!
  • measuringcups · 1 year ago
I really like the current version much better. I know it's just a little nitpick, but I think the "following me" page is really awesome as it is and don't like the new page. I just love seeing only the icons, it's one of my favorite things on the site. I think the current layout is just fine as it is.
  • Sinklar · 1 year ago
So, after 2 days testing the Beta...

    ### DESIGN :
The new design is beautiful ans simple, like the current one.
However I think that the new design is too rounded. The current version has a better balance betweew rounds and square, please keep it.
The new template looks more professional, but seems a little bit sad. Isn't it ?
I miss the coloured distinction between own and followed posts. This is essential ! Look at this picture, it's not easy to see directly who's who : http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/8961/sanstitre...

    ### ARRANGEMENT :
An important aspect of a "DASHBOARD" is to show the most info you can on a limited space. Everything has been made bigger ? Well... scroll down, scroll scroll...
The same about blogs "followed" : why not create a tab containing incoming posts from followed blogs ? You gain space on the main dashboard page, centralize and sort info, see the essential at a glance, choose to see the rest after that.
Pictures automatically 500px wide : once again, it takes too much space...

    ### FUNCTIONS :
There are new functions in the v4 or is it just a redesign ?
    Drafts, front-end posts sorting...
  • neiled · 1 year ago
I must admit I did like the old school minimalistic simple style too! I totally understand you having to 'refactor' the design to make way for new features, but in terms of the style I really think you guys should do a formal poll or something? At the end of the day it's your call, but I for one preferred the old style!
  • Hannes · 1 year ago
I just noticed now that I can now click on photos on the dashboard if they're linked to an URL. Thank you for implementing that.

Agreed, but is there some way to integrate that with the previous click-for-big functionality? Also I'd love for images inserted into posts (as opposed to Image Posts) to show up on the Dashboard.

  • Anne · 1 year ago
I much prefer the more visually pleasing current design. Improved functionality is one thing, but the new design is a bit harsh on the eyes.
  • Mariela · 1 year ago
I like the new changes. Looks clean and bold in dashboard mode.

As for my suggestions, I would love to see the ability to upload more than one photo directly when using the "photo post" function, rather than only uploading the first photo and then having to link to the url's of the remaining pix in the body of the message. Is there a chance you might introduce this?

On a related note, when multiple pix are posted using their url's, dashboard users can't see any of the photos beyond the first one that was directly uploaded. I would love to see this remedied so that our followers can see the full post in dashboard mode. Maybe have small thumbnail versions of the linked pix show up in dashboard mode, so that users know there's something to look at on the tumblelog?

Other than that, I'm good! :-)

As always, the Tumblr crew is doing an awesome job. Thanx for keeping us posted.
  • tushita · 1 year ago
i agree! this would be the main feature i want, aside from a timestamp/date for each post in the dashboard like i said before.
  • Luke · 1 year ago
I think having my avatar next to the create-a-post-bubble makes sense.

I don't particularly find this new design anymore usable and I'm not sure how useful it is to have "create a new tumblog" in my tumblog dropdown menu. Do a lot of people manage multiple tumblogs?
  • jayrunquist · 1 year ago
I would agree with the rest here.

I actually really like the header, just wish the images and elements were smaller until I click on them like the old layout AND my posts stood out more.

    Beyond that, nice direction!
  • blogik · 1 year ago
The logic of navigation is still not correct in my opinion.

I think it's pretty sexy, just like me, but it sounds like it's just an aesthetic enhancement. I'd rather see more functional improvements that will give us better control of our tumblogs. For example, more ways to make our pages look sexy without having to know CSS, built-in commenting (not through Disqus), built in search, sexier archive, etc.

Do it now or your sexiest tumblogger (me) will leave for Blogger!! Just kidding... I wouldn't do that, I love you too much.
  • suitep · 1 year ago
I'm going back and forth between the current and the new design. The recent fixes on the new are great, but I still prefer the light blue background behind postings in the dashboard on the existing design.
The new design, with text on white, seems harsh by comparison.
  • Bob Diamond · 1 year ago
I am a newbie. I appreciate that you changed the pencil icon on the text page to the word "edit" for people like me. It took me a long time to figure it out the first time. This was my first Tumblr blog. It definitely makes it easier to figure out how to edit something. Thumbs up!

I like the new functionality of some of the items.
The contrast on the old version was better. This new version is still nice no doubt. They both are. However, the new one is maybe a little flat. I know a lot of people are going for a little less flash (at least some designers) but I don't think it's necessary. You can bring on the bling. Professional is good but don't go for boring. Keep up the good work guys. I know your busting your butts.
  • Adam · 1 year ago
I like your currently layout (and I don't usually say things like that). The new design feels too flat, it lacks contrast, which makes me feel lost in the interface. Your current design does a really great job of directing a user to the proper functionality, through it's use of color, contrast, and layout.

Seriously, go for function, your current form is dead on!
  • thirdplacepro · 1 year ago
ya, I have to agree, rather underwhelming. The first thing I did was go to the customize my theme tab to see if you made that text box bigger. I then went back to the homepage to see if you made the publishing tool ajax driven (i.e. the text input field should just pop open below the buttons instead of taking me to a new page). I don't care for the gratuitous bubbles on the dashboard. I too love the tumblr product and push it aggressively to fellow tech geeks (I'm in the silicon valley, btw). But this is not a redesign IMO.
  • naum · 1 year ago
looks nice… …really clean looking UI, rounded boxes and all, though next / previous buttons have an incongruent contrast compared to all the rounded corner-ness on the rest of the page…
  • Tommy Birchett · 1 year ago
I'd like to be able to mix audio and photo in one post. i do field recordings and i sometimes like to include a photo from the location. for music it would be nice, too. call it "cover art." for now i post photos followed by their related audio, but there is not one link i can share to view them both as a single post.

secondly, add more fuinctionality to the "by" fllter. i'd like to see more options besides just "me" and "everyone" -- ideally this menu would include each tumblog i am following.

    thanks.

  • Fixpert · 1 year ago
    Love it, love it!

I have one little bit of feedback that's just nit-picky about UI consistency:

Let's say I go to post a new Photo, then in the Caption section, let's say I select a bit of text and click the "Insert/Edit link" icon. The little popup window that comes up doesn't look or feel like the rest of the site. In fact, the text fields are quite narrow and somewhat hard to click into to focus -- "Link URL" for example. The rest of the site is so big and cute and cartoony, it'd be cool if this little component (which I use so often) were consistent with the rest of the site.

Thanks for listening, I really love Tumblr and I love the new updates that you're previewing here!!
  • PF Anderson · 1 year ago
Like some other voices here, hoping that the new functionality includes
    - enabling search
    - enabling comments and comment management (without needing to edit the CSS to add in Discus widgets)
    - easy way to embed other widgets in a sidebar (again without requiring editing the CSS)
    - easy way to embed a blogroll in a sidebar (ditto).

I hope, really hope, that new Tumblr v4 be better and easier to use and not the Facebook-like fiasco that Last.fm become or a now-I-am-yet-another-Web2.0-compliant-site like the (now boring) Delicious.com. Or even worse, that Tumblr become just another Blogger!

Usability and simplicity are some of the reasons we love Tumblr (see Google too) and that makes it different from other blogging systems. Please, do not change that.

  • Amber · 1 year ago
If you are going to make change at least make it constructive. All you did was change the look around a little. Things that need to be fixed haven't been changed at all. Changing the look a tad bit doesn't make it better.
  • WeepinAngel · 1 year ago
Ack! The visuals are repulsive. Sorry team, but I'm not sure if I even want to try the new version just quite yet.

I do have to comment on 3 things though.

The link placement on the dashboard I really like. The tab you can click to switch to a different dashboard for the other tumblelog. I also like how the avatars on the dashboard are larger and rounded.

And the last thing, I like large font login fields.
  • abferry · 1 year ago
I haven't had time to root through all the comments yet, but one of the first things that stood out was how harsh the new design was on the eyes in comparison to the current design. Everything seems to have much higher contrast, and that will tire out your users' eyes much much fast than the current design. For example, on the dashboard, the different shades of blue as background for the followed posts were very pleasing to the eye; the blue makes the text seem nearly grey, which is clear and easy to read, but not at all harsh. This idea seems to be thrown out the window in the new design.
  • Dan Buell · 1 year ago
Aesthetics seem like a time-warp, not a big fan. Not a lot of meat in this redesign, only window dressing and them blinds is ugly!
  • Robert Bielling · 1 year ago
This is my first time on the internet using a blog post..
I flund trying to type in that small window was distracting and annoying.
My first draft of my blog disappeared, never to be found again because the small window was down near the bottom of my screen and I inadvertanly clicked outside of the little window. A pop out page would work much better, I think.
Also is there any way to cut and paste in your text screen. All I was able to do with the text was to highlight it and delete. Maybe I just don't understand how to use it.
    Good luck with the upgrades
    Robert

I was using the beta version for a week but I didn't like the fact that the icons for Edit, Delete, and Dashboard weren't in the top right corner when I'm on my tumblelog.
  • Made in DNA · 1 year ago
Hmmmmm, seems a lot of people have said what I wanted to say, but I will say this... the bigger font made me happier. I don't have the best of eyesight. Yes, I realize I'm in the minority, but I like it. Other than that, somehow I expected something different. It doesn't really seem like you changed anything. I wanted more tumblr themes, I wanted the OPTION to include replies WITHOUT having to add DISQUS or a third-party inline reply system. I wanted the option to change the number of entries on the page and their layout (3 per line, 3 lines or 2 per line, 4 lines, or classic tumblr, etc).

I'm not a designer or anything reputable, but I really like the new look. I think it's a very appealing and refreshing look. I agree with a few of the comments stating that it would be nice to have the ability to add multiple photos.

V.4 is a nice direction, but it still feels "BIG" in a small space. By this I mean that the images eat a lot of real estate in relation to the size of the text boxes. I also think that the text boxes looking like speech bubbles gives the site a sort of amateur feel to it. I'm a fan of a 'tab' look, where the avatar is incorporated into the text box by a solid box (giving it a 'pan handle' sort of look). I don't like the larger look because it gives me the impression that there is more filler than content. I half expected to see a slew of new features and not a visual overhaul when asked to comment on the V4 of tumblr. In short - be more like Apple and implement new features (but unlike Apple and implement useful ones more than 'toy' ones) and not be like Microsoft and add a new skin with a redesigned flow. You'll confuse and upset users (who will in turn blog on another site about why they left Tumblr and retard any further expansion).

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the rounded corners. They look grainy and unrefined. The idea is sound, but given the overall look and feel of Tumblr I think it detracts from what users are accustomed to.

Something I've learned over time, specifically with information architecture is that it is seldom required to modernize a look. It's often felt that users are in search of something 'fresh' but the truth is that they really aren't. They're in search of something easy, intuitive and encompassing. The addition of a comment box is welcome as may users enjoy giving feedback to other users and authors.

I can't help but agree that the gradient is unwelcome. Not only does it look like a dated idea, but Tumblr was original very basic and bold. Gradients subdue bold colors and distract the eyes from the written content. If you're trying to show off the design, then great, but users are trying to show off the written material. Furthermore, if a user wants gradients, then either upload a template with gradients for a user to choose, but there is always the custom HTML that some of use can do our own thing. In short, one of the things that first attracted me to Tumblr was how basic it felt. With a very basic design I felt that I was afforded the opportunity to customize my tumblog as much or as little as I wanted to. By adding all of these little tweaks youv'e diminished this feeling. Sorry, but that's how I feel.
  • linds_e · 1 year ago
*didn't read all the comments first*

1 - the rounded corners are a photoshop job gone bad :(
2 - i miss a lot of the color and iconography that helps as navigational devices. for example on the dashboard, delete and edit were easily recognizable as large, distinct shapes. now they are words of similar size and length and i have to read/process a fraction of a second longer. and links when you were creating a post (like "use a URL instead") were turquoise and jumped out easily but now they are greyish and i have to hunt for them a bit longer. Also missing the icons for filter, following, customize...
3 - clearly customize is still in the old style... but you knew that :) and customize could use some attention, it often seems to hang for me when i am previewing.
    4 - everything looks ginormeous
5 - not everyone who uses tumblr uses the dashboard as their main point of viewing. as in, i don't follow anyone and i just use it to power my blog. so what i am trying to say here is that by focusing so much on aesthetics on the dashboard (at the expense of usability, too) and not feature upgrades, you are missing a big opportunity. Here are features I would like to see:
    --multiple pictures per picture post
--ability for draft posts (right now i just make them private)
--sort the posts in your dashboard by the date you give them, not the date you actually wrote them, so that when you add all your back entries from another blog they don't bubble up to the top on your dashboard
--better tagging, like with categories and sub categories. more features around tagging.
--ability to delay posts, i.e. have them go up at a certain time
--search (okay i saw this is coming)
    --better rich text editor
--the ability to upload a custom theme as an html file or something (saving much copy/paste)

i dunno there are probably a ton more features that would be nice and other people have had ideas here too (as i'm sure you do too!) so i'll stop there. my point being that you guys are good aesthetically already because you are a little different... keep your focus on usability and features and i think you will find your efforts are well-rewarded there.

After checkin out the new look, I'm not impressed. I pretty much agree with other peoples comments in regards to:

-the background gradient has got to go! it's not easy on the eyes
-the bigger text (i.e where the title is listed) is pixelated.
    -colors - looks...depressing
-delete/edit button should be the icons
-pictures do not to be big - takes up too much screen real estate
    -better filter options
-there seems to be an extra line at the bottom of each rounded square?

-I do like how the various post options are more visually separated in the new design then the previous design.

-Are you gonna add more themes?

fyi - i am lookin at this via ff on my macbook pro

Thank you for efforts to manage tumblr.

Currently I don't understand why I should post something after selecting a GROUP. This is so confusing for novices and novices of tumblr (= casual users of other micro blogs)...

And the separation of Text, Link, and Quote is pretty redundant. I can put some link down on Text, and also put some quote on Text.

I was waiting to have the option to open another tumblelog with the same e-mail/account. The big letters are cool too.
  • mally · 1 year ago
honestly i don't think its as bad as people say it is on here.....some of the comments i've read seem to be just people LOOKING for stuff to criticize....i will say that i do like the older version better....because i never really had a problem with it........here are just my ideas to fix it:

-please, please please change that awful color. those weird blue fuzzy colors look like they were just thrown together.....they really do not look together. consider changing them.

-the logo is WAYY too big. it just looks like an image that was copied and pasted from google images or something...its so pixellated and fuzzy.....it looks awful to be honest.

-the font. oh dear.....were not blind. we can read it already. i can see making the font a little bigger but...you made it HUGE. and if you're a person that writes a lot on your blog...you can only fit about 3 or 4 on one page because the font is so big. please, please change that.

  • juandarien · 1 year ago
bug found, i guess: In the dashboard, when you filter the post of the people you follow, the options to create new post in your tumblr disappear until you reset the filter.
  • zaru · 1 year ago
I also agree with what Alber and some of the users have said. The current design is fine as it is. The aesthetic changes is unnecessary. Why fix something that is not broken? The current color scheme is fine and I love the current background color. Please don't change it.

The beta version is a tad too wordy. As mentioned, why replace the Big X and the Pencil icon with 'Delete' and 'Edit'? The icons are more visually stimulating than text. And why 'Customize this tumblelog' instead of the current 'Customize'? The addition of extra words was unnecessary.

The corners of the bubble boxes in Dashboard is...ugly, may I say so? It sort of have a pixelised feel to it. The current outline of the bubble boxes is clearer, sharper and more refined.

Also, I don't think there is a need to include a 'Open it' link to open our tumblr. Our portrait photo (avatar) already does that job. I think tumblr is supposed to be very streamlined, neat and easy, not cluttered and cumbersome.

On the topic of our portrait photos (or avatars), the current size is really fine. I don't need it to be bigger. In fact, nothing needs to be bigger.

As for new features, what I really would like to see is the addition of Tag Cloud.

I know you guys must have spent lots of time trying to improve the interface and there are others who approve of the new changes, but the new sometimes may not be better than the old. I hope you guys can consider seriously about our suggestions and opinions. Tumblr is great and I hope it can always maintain its greatness. :-)

the design its great, but i would like an option to show only a number of new post from my follows in the dashboard, like one post each.

    Hi
Just quickly looking at it from a usability issue here - instead of 'open it" I would have 'view tumblog" or 'view blog' it is what is clear. 'Open it' could be what is 'it'? users should not have to ask a question like that.

So I'm not a big fan of the new layout. I agree with the reasons people listed on here.
What I like about tumblr is it's simpleness. It's very easy to use- I may just stop using my other blogs, I do have a quite a few of them. Anyway, one of my issues with it is who it can be seen by. I either have to show it to everyone or it can only be seen by me. It would be nice if I could only share it with the people following my blog and not the whole world. If there was some sort of "followers" only function, that would be really useful. That's basically my only complaint.

P.S. for some reason it's not letting me login.
  • Jason Zada · 1 year ago
Although the new interface is arguably better or worse (i actually like it), I was hoping for some new features. The tool is already the smartest, easiest and most unique micro blogging tool out there, so what will make people feel coming back? More features, more intuitive ways of delivering content (taking a photo or video or audio through your built in microphone) and a little more control over format of templates, etc.

Thanks for making the most kick ass blogging tool on the block.

I would suggest giving the option for us, Tumblr users, to view the dashboard in the old or new mode just like that seen on Facebook. It has a new version which I dislike so I stay put in the old mode. I believe there are some who don't prefer to switch and others who does.

to my opinion, the design is fine, but the current is fine too, The news are good news (banning post from some following tumblers). One problem is the portrait pictures, they're a little bigger now and sometimes the quality of the picture is low.
Also, I still donno how to add the followers list in my tumblr as I can see in many other tumblrs. That's all!
  • steve · 1 year ago
having the http:// already in the input line is annoying.
  • Michelle · 1 year ago
I agree. I have posted over 1000 images to my tumblr, and I've never once typed in an image URL by hand. Rather, I copy and paste URLs, and so, I would assume, does everyone else.

Before, it was a simple matter of pasting into the field; now it's Select All, Backspace, Paste. The http may save a few characters of typing for a small percentile of people who actually do hand-type URLs, but for the rest of us it turns one step into three.

It may seem a bit of a trifling thing to complain about, but to me the entire joy of Tumblr is to be spontaneous... little inconveniences build up eventually, and take away from that joy.

I adore Tumblr, but almost everything about the redesign screams "needlessly complex" to me.
  • bbnnt · 1 year ago
no "techincal" changes, jsut a better visibility of things, wich is in my opinion a lot better.
  • Amy · 1 year ago

  • BrettA · 1 year ago
Gee... I trust if you're not gonna add a decent way to reorder items that you'll at least retain the order-by-date (including editing of dates) once you implement.

And to go from a huuuuuuge quote font to small seems pretty arbitrary... if you're going to effect change for change sake, it would be nicer to allow us to contyrol something as basic as font size, thanks.

And one of the things I disliked earlier is now worse... there was too much useless white space between photos before but now there's even MORE!?!? What possible good comes from adding more white space between a photo and the caption... d'ya like to make people scoll more for no benefit at all? And the simple default of all-white worked well - if people want more colour (like your greyish), can't they customize it? ... I want simple and clean like you had it, not additional useless complexity where each and every item is place in some arbitrary box, thanks (there's nothing at all wrong with simple).

Same conceptually with the logo, guys - please cut it back; because no one else cares and everyone knows it since we give 'em the x.tumblr.com URL anyway! (Please note what's between x. and .com.)

And where's the text at the top right, which I used as an intro to *everything*???

The two positives are the larger photos - thanks and much needed - and the for'd and back mechanism at page top... but I'm out'a here if the other arbitrary changes are actually going to be implemented... I'll be dancing uselessly around after every mod you guys make, if this is any indication. No thanks.

I'm a relatively new tumblr user.

    Things I like in V4
    - colour schemes are friendlier
    - organization of followers, helpful details and clean stack ups of users

Things I did not like in V4
    - the gradient background, things seems unfinished..
    - the lack of difference between my own posts and followed tumblrs
    - huge fonts. V3 have worked fine for me. Overly huge fonts looks a bit tacky
    - the rounded tab for the title on the right makes it look like there is just a bit too much rounded corners going on.
    - changes from using icons to text for edit/delete
    - fullsized image on dashboard is a bit of a hassle as I see the dashboard as a tool to skim through reading posts rather than seeing everything full sized.

Anything else I can probably live with (even if I have grown fond of V3).

i like the new tumblr. but i keep having to sign in all the time. im not sure why the site is doing that. because i would just like to stay signed in as normal. but maybe you can make the beta a choice like yahoo does for the yahoo mail beta. and whoever like the new site can keep it and whoever doesnt can stick to the old one. but i really like how i can have both of the blogs on one homepage. rather then signing in and out for either one. and theres just an easy button for me to get to either one.

it would be foolish to change the look of it. dont try to reinvent the wheel, so many interfaces get ruined because people think they need to "update the look". the look is classic and non obtrusive and highly functional.

  • amy · 1 year ago
so you made it all big?? why? was it not big enough? did you have complaints on it?

personally, i like the new background color- but i had no problems with colors before. the rounded corners are too much- yes, i agree with everyone there.

as for the white backgrounds for everyone's posts in the feed- i don't like that. i like seeing mine in a different color- the original blue.

why didn't you just make it more custom-oriented so people could choose these features?

seriously- don't mess with what works. you don't have to reinvent yourselves. you guys were great!
