Tumblr Staff: Introducing: Tumblr v5 | Tumblr Staff

  • ariahfine · 11 months ago
Things look pretty nice here. But I've got to vent for a minute.
You seriously pulled our chain with the drafts and Queue thing for months? Now it's gone with no word about it.
Can't you at least let us know if your thinking about it or are ever really going to do anything with it? I'm just curious.
Thanks for finally allowing us to see our favorites.
  • teleute · 11 months ago
    Ditto that. :(
  • Beret · 11 months ago
It'll probably be in tumblr pro.
  • Izzy · 11 months ago
    Double ditto!
  • taber · 11 months ago
Awesome! One quip -- could you specify some fallback fonts for the right-hand links in the Dashboard? Right now, it's only looking for Lucida Grande, and on Windows and Linux systems, it's hardly guaranteed that one will be available. As a result, right now it's showing in crummy Times New Roman on my machine. I'd probably do, like, Lucida Grande, Lucida Sans, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif or some such order.

Nice refresh! I like having all my tumblelogs visible at once on the right-hand side.

OMG David Karp has a Tumblr crush on me.
  • chvnx · 11 months ago
    Awesome.

You've out-done yourselves again. This is why we're all so dedicated to your incredible service.

    Thanks!
  • olerud · 11 months ago
Version 5 is incredible. Really. All the hard work and dedication you guys put into this site is truly admirable and commendable.
Though the new layout, I must say, is 95% great.
The extra 5% is loss in the layout for the "Global Search", as Marc called it when I emailed him several months ago, when it was accidentally released.
Except when it was accidently released, it showed up the same way Dashboard searches and My Post searches show up: in Dashboard type blocks.
The square layout, while working for stuff like Radar and all that, doesn't really work when it comes to the whole Tumblr search. Being able to fully read and see whatever is posted without having to click is what got me so excited when Global search was leaked months go. And worse, the search under Tumblr doesn't even include every post that includes the searchers keyword, instead it only picks up on posts several weeks back.

I feel like an idiot complaining, but I thought you guy were gonna keep the Global search the same, seeing that you guys kept the Dashboard/My Posts search result layouts the same. Most people don't mention searches when it comes to these upgrades I've noticed. They are more concerned with seeing what they've Liked (which is a crucial and beautiful additional tool). But I feel that being able to search and to see the results in the same way you can look at Dashboard results would be the ideal look. Leave the square bingoesque blocks to the Radar screen.
I hope this is read and my suggestion for what I think is a more ergonomically friendly Tumblr search layout would at least be considered.
Thank you Tumblr Staff. This is a major upgrade to the site.

Yeah. I think we are going to need some API-savvy hero-tumblrer to rebuild the GREAT GREAT GAGAWONDERFUL Tumblr search as it was in v4 in a brand new external webapp.

Now it may be sexy and ajax enabled, but it's mostly unreadable, hides any relevant info, ignores every precious former post and has lost all filtering options.

The alternative to the made-it-yourself route would be for the good Tumblr folks to give us some Tumblr love in the form of a secret gorgeous v4 search URL, and then to apply some greasemonkey-fu to substitute v5 for v4 search, but i suppose we can only hope for that while the Great Tumblr Search mashup is being built by a teenage mutant armadillo in a hidden arctic base in Uranus.

Now I'll begin another hybrid v3 userstyle. Heigh-ho.
  • Álber · 11 months ago
WHOP! I thought I had tried that, but old-style tumblr search seems to be at Search > My Dashboard.

Search > Tumblr apparently choses SOME of the (best, last) results. A bit unintuitive, but I am happy with that.

    Still no filters, sadly.
  • olerud · 11 months ago
Yeah. 'Search > Dashboard' and 'Search > My Post' are fine, as they should be. That's the best layout for search results.

But since I experienced 'Search > Tumblr' back in November when it was accidentally leaked (I feel like the only person that realized it was out for that day or two), and since it had the same layout that Dashboard and My Posts search results have now, it's disappointing to see this square result page that mirrors the 'Radar' page. And the fact that it only picks up "some" is really degrading. The Global Search, in the format they had it before and the format the other searches have now, is the best one. I don't know what caused the difference.

I just hope someone decides to change it. If I worked at Tumblr that'd be my number one priority at this point.

    We'll see.
  • Álber · 11 months ago
Okay, now I understand it: 'Search > Dashboard' does Global Search if you DO NOT follow anybody.

I can attest to that. For some reason, I prefer to follow tumblelogs directly, going there periodically, so I don't use 'Follow'. Since v4 I have been using 'Filter > All posts' to do global searches. It's amazing, it's great, it's wonderful, it's Tumblr at its heist.

I take from your words that it didn't do that if you were following people, just the same as now, with v5.

Now my last comments might make a bit more sense.

WHERE is the view my post?
  • hilker · 11 months ago
absolutely top drawer, people. this is amazing.
  • arealcoolhand · 11 months ago
I like the "Likes" page. LOL
  • Lenary · 11 months ago
well done. i think i might have the first user made theme on there. yay me!

and you're right. it does look damn sexy
  • Nadinator · 11 months ago
Well done! It's cool how integrated everything is now, including the themes :)

    Amazing job!
  • isha · 11 months ago
Fantastic, except for one thing: the fonts on the sidebar that list how many people are following me and what I've liked are WAY too small. Same with the dashboard notifications of likes/reblogs. It's hard to read! Otherwise, though, great job.
  • kurokikaze · 11 months ago
    Gwaaaah :)
  • QuahZi · 11 months ago
Tumblr....Oh Tumblr.....could you be any more badass? I love the updates and I am super stoked to see what you guys have in the hopper for the future!

Tumblr Team, keep rockin' our socks. Thx for all the hard work!
  • aprilini · 11 months ago
i like the video intro. it passes your excitement about the changes on to me :)
  • shawnblog · 11 months ago
Very cool indeed. Maybe it's just Mac/Firefox (?) but the Explore and Account top nav links do not work at all (or maybe it's only for me)?
  • daryn · 11 months ago
this is awesome, great job guys!
  • Trin · 11 months ago
    Looking forward to more!

Awesome job, guys. I'm loving the trends page.
  • rogersdc · 11 months ago
Very cool features - and impressive growth. The stats page will definitely suck me in.
  • totalblamblam · 11 months ago
I'm not really technotastic or anything, so I can't really find anything to complain about, but let me just say that I've been having tumblrgasms all morning and loving. it. Nice work. And way to make me even less productive at work than I was before. High five.
  • jm3 · 11 months ago
    hellaz awesome. we heart this.
  • fascinated · 11 months ago
    This is sweet!
  • shadowfirebird · 11 months ago
    It's very pretty.

I like the new features: tumblr search, especially. But you've also taken away features. If I used the dashboard I'd be pretty pissed off right now because (once again) there is no longer a way to just see your own posts (or, at least a way that is obvious to first look at the UI).

You did this once before, people complained, and you added a filter bar. So IMO, taking it away again was a bit silly -- you knew people wanted it.

General impression: full of gloss and graphics, signifying not much. Sorry.
  • alexandraaa · 11 months ago
click on your tumblrs name in the right hand column and you can see your own posts as well as all of your notifications
  • shadowfirebird · 11 months ago
Or, click on the drop down in the search box on the top right, select "your posts" and don't add any search criteria. Press return.

But neither of these methods are apparent from looking at the user interface.

If a function that lots of people want is not obviously accessible from the user interface, then the user interface is not designed well.
  • shadowfirebird · 11 months ago
Hmm. One of the "blogs I might like", according to the new interface, appears to be a blog that's been deleted.

Is this some sort of subtle post-ironic hint?
  • Marco · 11 months ago
Thanks. This should now be fixed.
  • shadowfirebird · 11 months ago
    thanks mate. impressive as always...
  • Parker · 11 months ago
Looks nice. One thing, when I tag a post via drop-down suggestion method it puts up a tag for the selection I choose per usual but also makes a tag for the 2 or 3 letters I typed in. Easy to [X] out but I figured it was a glitch.
  • paul · 11 months ago
the "Create a new tumblelog" link looks jacked up in Google Chrome. NBD, just sayin.
  • gschueler · 11 months ago
Is there going to be an official way to include the Notes about a post (as all you Tumblr-staff seem to be able to do already?)
  • Matt · 11 months ago
I agree, the feature above that renders a posts like's and reblog's as if in the dashboard is awesome. I'd love to work with that.
  • Izzy · 11 months ago
I'm not sure that I like the notes at the bottom layout. It took me a few seconds to even see the comments. Instead, all I saw is an seemingly infinite list of people who "liked this" or "reblogged this from." The way it's set out above seems overly redundant, wouldn't you agree?

They should compress the likes and rebloggs into a little blurb at the bottom and only expand the rebloggs where someone comments on a post. I think that would be better.
  • Tomi Itkonen · 11 months ago
Hi. For some reason, the new archive page looks a bit off:
    http://thebookofw.com/archive

It shows something for the April 1970...
  • Mimzy · 11 months ago
Just wanted to congratulate you guys on an awesome release. I haven't seen many developers as dedicated as you guys, and it shows. I can't wait to see what you'll come up with next.
  • Nate Pilling · 11 months ago
Awesome. I can't wait to see what's still in store!
  • olerud · 11 months ago
whoa. you're right. if you don't follow anyone, Search > Dashboard' is Global Search.
thanks for letting me know :)
  • Parker · 11 months ago
How do I browse random tumblrs from the map without the live post function repositioning me all the time? Is there a way to turn that off?
  • deuts · 11 months ago
I wonder when are you implementing the built-in comment system in tumblr. I'm sick of installing third party commenting system that's just hard to customize....
  • kanamit · 11 months ago
Wow. Tumblr, what are you doing?

The new Search > Tumblr is awful in the current square block layout. Truly awful.
Good sir Alber, who responded to my first and second comment below told me that if you aren't following anyone, Search > Dashboard is essentially Global Search without the ridiculously flawed current layout. It's Global Search the way it's should be and the way searching one's Dashboard and My Posts looks.

Then why Search > Dashboard (if you aren't following anyone) totally gone now. I can't search everyone's tumblr. Why was this taken down?
Come on guys, make Global Search you're absolute priority. It makes searching the site by keyword extremely fun and a great way to find other tumblrs. The incomplete results of the current square layout (Its bullshit, i'm sorry) is horrible.
Anyway, I'm just pissed cause you guys seem to have everything you need to get it going but have only taken it away.. twice already.

    Sincerely,
    A baffled Tumblr user.
  • kanamit · 11 months ago
    first and second comment above**

Then why is Search > Dashboard**

    your absolute priority**
  • Álber · 11 months ago
Tumblr, that was sadly awful. I tell you I'm so, so glad there's that solution to keep a GAGAWONDERFUL search mode for Tumblr, and you NUKE IT? That was not a bug, that was one of your awesomest features!

I have killed my dear, dear Global Search.

    Ugly.
