Tumblr Staff: Bookmarklet Upgrades Look how hot this shit is.... | Tumblr Staff

  • Marshall Preddy · 6 months ago
First, props. It looks great, and I love the improvements in the Advanced tab. That said, I was hoping for three things when you finally updated this thing.

    1) Auto-complete / suggest with the tags.

    2) A block-quote / indent option when posting videos and photos.

    3) A way to link to chats and/or add a "description" section with rich text. I can't tell you how many times I want to link to a chat. But it happens often.

I was excited by the announcement, but you blew it by omitting autocomplete for tags. Sad to say, but I'm really disappointed.

    Fabulous! FINALLY.
I am SO glad you finally got the queue up on the bookmarklet. You've renewed my faith in tumblr's amazingness.

(though you still have to figure this tumblarity thing out).
  • ariahfine · 6 months ago
    Out of curiousity.

Why doesn't Google Chrome allow the rich html editor? At least mine doesn't.
  • shadowfirebird · 6 months ago
47 / 10 for adding the queue facility to the bookmarklet. My undying thanks.

Only 3 / 10 for the video tab in the bookmarklet, though, because the caption box almost completely obscures the video preview box (Ubuntu 8.04, Firefox 3.04). I'll email you a screenshot.

It keeps posting to Twitter even though I unchecked the box in the Advanced tab. Is there a problem with my browser?
  • David Karp · 6 months ago
We'll check this out. Very possibly a bug.
  • David Karp · 6 months ago
Should be fixed now. Please let me know if it gives you any more trouble!
  • ipodrulz · 6 months ago
I'm still having this issue... posted all my photo tweets to Twitter.

And by upgrade, you mean recoloring/moving around controls :P

I would have liked an inline bookmarklet (so that it appears via javascript on the actual page, as opposed to being a popup) - like bit.ly and posterous do.
  • David Karp · 6 months ago
    How come?
  • Sahil Desai · 6 months ago
Don't get me wrong, i love the new look, and how *all* the advanced controls are there now. The main reason is so that I don't have to keep switching between the bookmarklet pop-up and the page i'm writing about.

The posterous bookmarklet stays fixed so that even while I'm scrolling around my focus and text entry etc are still in view.

Something else neat would be that while you are in the "tumble" mode, with the bookmarklet activated, you could allow for users to click on an image on the page and automatically use that as the photo post, as opposed to having to search the tiny thumbnails for the image you are looking for; this is excruciating when the page has a ton of images :P

I'm not a fan of Posterous, so I shall continue to use tumblr obviously, cos it's awesome, but I was really hoping for this in the upgrade :\

    Thanks!

LOVE the point about making images/etc. interactive. That could be killer. I generally hate how in-window bookmarklets feel, especially since they break Cmd-W. We'll investigate (it might be easy to make it optional).

    Thanks, Sahil!
  • Sahil Desai · 6 months ago
oh yeh! I've come across that too i think. But yeh, you could just have both bookmarklets available for users to choose, that is all I ask. Always obliged to help out.
  • deuts · 6 months ago
Please don't do this. I don't like the posterous-type bookmarklet, and loved Tumblr's a lot.

Haay, you really can't please everybody, yeah?

But you can make his request optional, though.

Since the upgrade, the bookmarklet won't link to the Flickr unique page for the photo, but only to the homepage. Is that an oversight? I much prefer to link directly to the Flickr page which contains the single photo and the possibility of larger sizes.
  • David Karp · 6 months ago
Sorry, this was an oversight. We unintentionally hid the target link option for photos. That will be back in a moment, and correctly link to the Flickr permalink pages.
  • David Karp · 6 months ago
This should be back to normal now. Sorry for the trouble!
  • clairity · 6 months ago
Wow, that was an amazing response time on the photo link problem! Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to enjoying all the new features of the bookmarklet.

Looks good! But I'm still missing this one thing.. I find myself often in situation, where I want to use Blockquote in almost any editor mode. Not in the "Quote" mode only. Now I have to edit html any time I want a quote. And this could be just one button.....
  • deuts · 6 months ago
Yeah I would have loved this button as well. Only that maybe the dev team are trying not to confuse newcomers or those who really don't have ideas about html and these kind of things.

But of course, they can do it in a way that it'll be much clearer than a sunny day what's the difference between a blockquote and a quote-type post.

By the way, it's not sunny here in our place. So sad....:D

Please, please allow the text input space to be increased in size. The default is fine, but I sometimes write more.
  • Foomandoonian · 6 months ago
FYI, I've had issues with the Twitter integration via. the bookmarklet. I sometimes uncheck 'post to twitter', but it still gets posted there anyway.

Works fine through the dashboard though.

    Otherwise, big improvement!

Either something about the new bookmarklet or some recent change in the API has totally busted functionality in IE8. It starts to work properly (loads the preliminary fields and tabs), then issues a refresh and endlessly tries to fetch a string of language and other scripts that the server doesn't want to give. It also is giving me strange feedback in the form of requests for _s.jpg from the main tumblr.com domain level which doesn't exist; this may have something to do with Flickr-specific instances.
